Celebrated as one of the most handsome, fast, and versatile sailing rigs, schooners plied the trade winds of the world for more than two hundred-fifty years.
In the 1790's, Maryland led the United States in shipbuilding and Baltimore was the undisputed leader of this.
American privateers, many of them sailing out of Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore Clippers built in Fells Point, captured or sank some 1,700 British merchant vessels during the war of 1812. Other Baltimore Clippers served as cargo vessels to bring needed munitions and other armaments through the naval blockade that the British imposed on the US coastline, including Chesapeake Bay.

This exquisite, award winning model was built by master modeler Igor Akimov, and is being offered at $15,000 US.
