The Bonhomme Richard

Built from plan's by Jean Boudriot. The Bonhomme Richard was converted from the East Indian Man, "Duc de Duras". She sailed in to history when she engaged H.M.S Serapis, September 23rd, 1779, with John Paul Jones as her Captain.

She is built from the keel up just as the French shipwright's did at that time.

She has no less then 62 frames all made of maple. Her hull planking is also maple with cherry wales along her side. Her deck's have every beam that would have been installed along with ledges and carling's according to plan's and French practice, also made of maple. Her carving's were done in boxwood and then painted gold. Her keel is actually made from oak, as per the real ship. Other wood's used in her constructed are walnut and dogwood. One side of her is fully planked, and the other down to her wale's, so you can see all her maple frames. She even has trunnels ( wooden nails) that were used to hold the planking n place. Her rigging is also in accordance with French practice of the time. The ship wheel is made out of boxwood, and can be turned to operate the rudder. Her cannon's are true to plans and even have chains that locked the trunnons to keep them in place. Planking as been left off in places on the deck to allow a view of the Captain's quarters, complete with dresser. Many other items are installed below deck, such as the stove with cooking pot's under the forcastle.

Scattered about this model are the ships crew members, realistically engaging in their appropriate activities, including one who is using the head!
