The Royal Yacht Caroline was built in 1749, to serve King George II as his state Yacht.
In my opinion, the Mantua/Panart kit of the Royal Caroline is a very good one. The laser cutting is very precise, and the supplied wood, fittings and ornamentation is of relatively high quality. Building as per the instructions and supplied parts will produce a very attractive model, but there are many errors that should be corrected if one wants a more accurate representation of the real ship.
Using the Anatomy of the Ship book, The Royal Yacht Caroline 1749, by Sergio Bellabarba and Giorgio Osculati as my reference, I’ve made dozens of changes and corrections to this model, which I am building by commission for a client.
Many of the materials provided by the kit were substituted with my own,for example Pear wood was used for the deck and hull planking, and Ebony for the wales and railings.
All planks are scale lengths and are treenailed. The inner bulwarks and bulkheads made of Bloodwood.
All of the ropes and cables visible in these photos we hand laid on my home made rope walk.
