| THE ROYAL YACHT CAROLINE
During the reigns of George II and George III of England, Royal Caroline was the principal royal yacht. She was built at Deptford by Joshua Allin at a cost of 12,000 pounds, was 232 tons and had a gun deck length of 90 feet by 24 feet beam. She was named after George II's late Queen, Caroline of Ansbach.
In 1760 George III became King and immediately married Princess Charlotte
von Mecklenberg-Strelitz who then became Queen of England at the age of 17.
The yacht was renamed Royal Charlotte in her honour and the young Queen
formed such an attachment to it, that, although superseded, the yacht was
not taken out of service and broken up until 1820 - two years after her
death.
Royal Caroline was not only a beautiful yacht, but represented an important
stage in the refinement of British shipbuilding. The Admiralty used her as
the prototype for a long series of frigates of various classes built between
1750 and 1800.
This large, navy board style model is scratchbuilt and construction is
"plankonbulkhead", employing mainly English lime and boxwood, with triple planking in American basswood. Approximately 1000 hours of work were involved over a period of 2 years.
