The Cutty Sark
The Cutty Sark was first launched November 22nd, 1869 from Dunbarton in the Scottish Clyde. Perhaps second only to the H.M.S. Victory in the hearts of British Seamen, she was built to carry tea in the China Run. She was the fastest ship taking the Cape of Good Hope route. The name comes from Robert Burns' poem, Tam O'Shanter; Tam meets a group of witches, most of whom are ugly, but for Nannie, who is young and beautiful and is described as wearing only a "cutty sark", i.e., a short chemise or shirt. The ship's figurehead is a representation of this witch. Unfortunately, she was built around the time of the opening of the Suez Canal and became obsolete as a trade ship in 1877.
