| The Harvey
The Harvey is a beautiful example of the early two masted Baltimore clippers. Clippers were lightly gunned and used for a number of
purposes, all of which made the most of their speed and maneuverability (e.g. blockade runners). The sleek hull and sharp prow was designed for speed and featured an uncluttered deck. This was so that a maximum cargo could be stored (a very valuable attribute as was later proven), and also so that the sailors attending the sails could have as much free room as possible.
American clippers really came into their own when California was incorporated as a state of the Union in 1848. When it was discovered that California was a state with tremendous natural wealth, the resulting rush, including the Gold rush, could only be met on sea using the very fastest ships such as the Harvey. This also enabled a less
perilous journey than on land. Some fast times were recorded, such as New York to California in eighty-nine days.
This model is constructed from the Artesania Latina Kit. The hull is double planked with an outer layer of mahogany. The clinker plank on frame cutter is scratch-built. Over a 500 hours was spent in the careful construction and attention to detail. The model is displayed in full sail but, depending on the buyers wishes, the sails could be furled or removed.
