THE HM BARK ENDEAVOUR

Length: main deck 64cm (25”)
Length: taffrail to tip of jib boom: 93cm (36½”)
Keel to main mast truck: 81cm (32”)

Lieutenant James Cook's Endeavour Bark is to Australia, what Nelson's Victory is to England, and U. S. S. Constitution is to United States. Cook's name is much revered as the discoverer of the East Coast of what is now Australia. This model with an upper deck length of 25 inches is a faithful reproduction built to a scale of approximately 1:45. The carefully researched plans, drawn up by Karl Heinz Marquardt in his volume of the Endeavour from the Anatomy of the Ship volumes, where carefully adhered too.

Entirely scratch built, the only non-handmade parts are some small glass beads, used as parrels on the driver gaff at the mizzen mast and some copper wire. The brass ships bell and cannons were turned on a small lathe. All blocks and deadeyes are hand carved. The model took just under two years to construct, by the ribs on keel method. Each rib is laminated from two layers of beech, and sits in the notched keel. A short grain rainforest timber, white beech was used throughout, except for the decking and masts and spars which are Oregon pine. The hull is planked inside with white beech and outside with a layer of walnut, overlaid with beech.

All rigging is hand woven where necessary on a small home made rope-making machine. The model has cable-laid lines for the main anchor cables, shrouds, and fore and back stays. Cable-laid comprises a core rope with 3 lines wrapped around it. These were capable of taking the great strains they had to bear. All of the ratlines are clove hitched to the shrouds.

The four boats shown were carried on the spar gallows, and comprise Mr. Bank's skiff, and the three ship's boats, the yawl, longboat and pinnace. The armament carried comprised 10 four-pound cannons, and 12 swivel guns. 6 cannons were rigged on the waist deck, and 4 were stowed in the main hold, below decks.

The model shows the platform over the tiller arm which allowed the officers on the quarter deck to cross over the long tiller arm, with its raised steel arm to clear the chimney of the stove in the great cabin below. Later on as the compliment of livestock (sheep, pigs) increased, pens were built on the quarterdeck, but as no dimensions are known they are not included. Cabins shown on the lower deck are as accurate as possible, allowing for the fact that the top half of the model complete with all the rigging can lift off, and space for this action had to be allowed for.

The two flags fitted are accurate to the time, as the cross of St. Patrick was then not included on the jack because Ireland had not been made part of the union of the United Kingdom. Silky oak, another rainforest timber, was used for the baseboard and the hull sits on Perspex rests cut to the hull profile. No display case is included.

This model is an outstanding value, offered at only $5000US.
