There have actually been five different HMS Victory ships, but the most current was launched in 1765, cost 63,176 pounds and took six years to build. She is the ultimate development of the wooden sailing man- of-war. Victory is 227 feet long, has a 52 foot beam, and carried 104 cannons of various calibres, and 850 men.
![]() [ENLARGE] During the famous Battle of Trafalgar of 1805, Admiral Lord Nelson was shot and killed, and Victory was badly damaged. She has since been lovingly restored and now rests in drydock in Portsmouth, England. |
Amost all of her gunport lids are in the open position, supported by two spans (ropes) each,
and most of the cannons are "run out". One of the most difficult aspects of modelling the
HMS Victory are her gracefully sweeping headrails. The ornate and intricate stern galleries are also quite difficult to reproduce in this relatively small scale, but I'm quite proud of this result.

I have been building model ships for over twenty years, and consider the Victory to be one of the most challenging. This is my third model of her. I plan on building my fourth, and last ,after my visit to the real HMS Victory
at Portsmouth in 2005, where I will join in the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, Hope to see you there!
This model is built to a scale of 1:90, and is of plank on bulkhead construction. That is to say, the model starts with a plywood keel and frames, and is then covered with two layers of planking. As you will see from these photos, the portion of the hull below the waterline is actually coppered. On the full sized HMS Victory, there are over three thousand plates in multiple layers, on the model there are over 1500 individual copper plates each measuring 5mm x 15mm in size.

![]() STERN VIEW The real Victory has over 27 miles of rigging and under sail carried 4 acres of canvas. The rigging has always been my favourite part of model ship building, but it takes a very high level of patience, research and concentration to get it right, not to mention a steady hand!! This particular model was built from the Momoli Kit, and took over a thousand hours to complete. Although there were several errors in the plans, and much of the material supplied for rigging as well as that for the headrails and moldings, were discarded, this was still a good kit in my opinion.
