History of model:
The "Mattea" or as it became known in English history, the "Matthew", was purpose built for
John Cabots 1497 voyage to the New World. Where he landed along the shores of eastern North
America is still open to debate. The model is based on a re-construction built in Bristol,
England to celebrate the 500th anniversary of this voyage. Colin Mudie designed the
re-construction. The model has received various "historic touches" not present on the
re-construction due to various maritime regulations. Next to the better known "Santa Maria"
the "Matthew" is the next most important vessel with regards to the early exploration of
North America.
