| OLD IRONSIDES
The USS Constitution hardly needs an introduction. "Old Ironsides" was commissioned by George Washington in 1794, her keel was laid in 1795, she was launched in 1797, and set sail on July 22, 1798. The Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat.
This fine model was built from the Model Shipways kit. At a scale of approximately 1:76, this is one of the largest and most historically accurate kits available. The construction is plank-on-bulkhead, and is as accurately reproduced, as the scale would allow. Particular detail was paid to the color scheme by viewing actual photographs and documents. The model accurately portrays the 'bright'wood on the masts and spars, as well as the true green colors on the bulwarks, waterways and gunwales. No time clock was kept on this model, but it took an estimated 1,500-2,000 hours over about four years, to complete. The model measures 48" long, 32" tall from the keel, and 19" wide at the main spar.
This is an exquisite model that any museum would be proud to display.
The model comes with a display case measuring 53" long, 37" high, and 24.5" wide.
Legs, standing the case up 28" from floor height, are included, but are easily removed if not required for display. The display case is totally handcrafted from red oak, and finished to enhance the beautiful wood grain.
