The Prins Willem

This very fine model was scratch built over a 18 month period, taking some 2000 hours ,using a set of plans purchased from Modeller's Shipyard at Nowra, NSW. All the figures on the ship are handcarved. The guns on the deck slide on rails so that they can be moved inward or out, all port lids are hinged and could be closed. All doors on the ship are also hinged as can be seen in the front closeup photo. The hull planks were handsawn out of walnut veneer covered plywood and the deck planks are teak veneer. The carved figures and anchor were carved out of pine as were the barrels on deck. All the guns were fashioned from Tasmanian Oak doweling. Nylon twine was used for all the ropes to minimize stretch. The overall length of the ship is 1900 mm (74 3/4 inches) width 760 mm (30 inches) and the hight 1450 mm (57 inches). The display case is made out of pine and varnished in a rose mahogany colour, the case stands on turned legs, not shown in the photographs, 600 mm (23 1/2 inches) high. The main case is able to be lifted off this stand so as to make handling and transporting easier. Where the ships stand is shown, this can be turned 360 degrees and sits on a drawer which can be pulled out of the case, so as to make access to the model more easier also. The top off the case has a hinged lid, so as to be able to get to the lights for maintenance. .The dimensions of the case are length 2000 mm (78 3/4 inches) width 780 mm (30 3/4 inches) hight 2260 mm (89 inches)
