| THE SCOTTISH MAID (Schooner 1839)
Ordered by the firm of Nicol and Munro, she was built to compete with steamers on the coastal run between Abeerden and London. As freight rates were based on tonnage measurements, Willim Hall sought to acheive the greatest speed with the smallest tonnage.
One of the earliest designers to develop models based on studies made in model tanks, Hall discovered that if the stem had a 50-degree forward rake, he could reduce the tonnage measurement while giving the hull a sharp entrance and hollow(or convex) waterline, a primary characteristic of later clipper ships. While this "Abeerden bow" worked well in the Scottish Maid and other relatively small vessels, larger square-riggers so modeled were wet ships and took excessive water over the bow.
Handcrafted using the double plank on bulkhead method. the hull is constructed with a layer of samba planks covered by a second layer of walnut. Main deck is planked with mukali. Deck furnishing are wood, brass and cast metal. Mast, boom and gaffs are African walnut. Fitting consist of wood (boxwood, sapelia, ramin, mukali and African walnut) cast metal and brass. Sails are cotton canvas and rigging is cotton.
