| The Sovereign of The Seas
This truly opulent ship, built for the king of England in 1637 was a massive undertaking by shipbuilders of Britain. Not only did this ship have colossal firepower of over 100 guns, but it was also overlaid in bronze ornamentation of well over 600 pieces, causing sailing difficulties under certain conditions due to the added weight. This ship was built to stroke the ego of the king of the day, Charles I.
The bronze ornamentation of this ship makes it a nightmare for model builders who would want to build a ship of this calibre from scratch. This ship, to be affordable, is best built in kit form. Even though the kit may not be exactly true to the original, the grandeur of it is still breathtaking when built with care and great skill. The hundreds of bronze castings that adorn this model are made through the lost wax process of casting, (just as the original castings were made), and are superbly crafted.
This Models History
This Sovereign of The Seas model was built over a 20-year period. It took 1000 hours to complete and has many extra details added to it by the model maker, Dennis McKay. The hull was constructed using the 'double plank on frame' method. Cannon balls and their racking, ramming rods for the guns, and gun carriage detailing were added. Ship painting was held to a minimum to expose the rich wood lustre of this vessel. Canvas sails were withheld to allow unrestricted viewing of the masts and rigging. Guns on the lower decks were drawn in from the outer hull for more accurate realism. Hatch covers were moved aside and stairs added to lower deck detailing. Various doors were added and all decking was covered with nailing detail. Powder buckets with rope handles and water barrels also give authentic reality to the vessel. There are no plastic pieces used. The above-mentioned are only some of the extra enhancements added to The Sovereign. A custom-made hardwood cabinet measuring L48" X H40" X W21" comes with the model.
